Reasons to Stay
Not a list, but a constellation.
Each point of light is a star I lit for myself.
On the darkest nights, choose one and let it guide you.
Choose One Star
If everything feels like too much, you don’t need to read the whole sky.
Let one star find you. One is enough.
What you feel right now is powerful, and it is not permanent.
Storms can fill the horizon for a while, but they do not erase the stars.
Brightest Stars
- Your body is working to keep you here: Heart beating. Blood moving. Synapses firing. Cells repairing. Breath returning, again and again.
- The nervous system can soften: One long exhale can begin the shift. Even a few seconds of gentleness can remind your body that the danger is not forever.
- Small comforts still exist: Warm showers. Cozy sweatshirts. Soft blankets. Quiet rooms. A mug between your hands. Sunlight on your skin.
- This moment is not the whole sky: What you feel right now is powerful and it is not permanent. Feelings change. Storms can fill the horizon for a while, but they do not erase the stars.
- The sky still exists above you: Blue mornings. Violet evenings. Clouds drifting where they please. Light will always return — morning after night, spring after winter, tides after the ebb.
- Sounds that move through you: A song, a voice, or a melody you haven’t heard yet that will someday feel like it understands you exactly.
- Moments of human warmth: Someone holding a door, remembering your name, smiling when they see you, or offering a kindness you didn’t expect.
- Understanding still exists: Someone, somewhere, understands more than you might think — even if you haven’t met them yet. You are not the only one who feels the way you do.
- Ideas still waiting to be born: Words unwritten, photographs unseen, moments not yet captured, and thoughts only you could bring into the world.
- Staying leaves room for change: The other option is final. Staying keeps possibility open — new understanding, unexpected help, and days that feel different than today.
- The future version of you who feels freer: Nourishment without fear. Sleep without dread. Laughter without guilt. Self-compassion without shame. A life that feels more spacious and at ease than it does right now.
- Your presence alters the pattern of the world: Even the smallest kindness can ripple farther than you can see. Each one changes the shape of the world a little. Because of that, the constellation would not look the same without you in it.
A Constellation of Reasons
Not every star needs to shine at once. Sometimes one small reason is enough.
✦ Of the Body
- Staying alive holds possibility.
- The warmth of breath on a fogged window, the relief of one soft exhale.
- Waking rested and feeling your body as an ally instead of an enemy.
- The comfort of a warm sweatshirt fresh from the dryer.
- The refreshed feeling of ice-cold water when you’re thirsty.
- The future promise of eating without fear, shame, or guilt — tasting sweetness and savoring it fully.
- The spark of life continues its rhythm.
✦ Of the Seasons
- Flowers blooming at the start of spring.
- Cool drops of summer rain.
- Autumn leaves set aflame in color.
- Winter’s first snowfall — quiet and crystalline.
- Sunrises and sunsets, and the golden hour in between.
- Thunderstorms watched from the safety of blankets.
- Blue skies stretching endlessly above.
✦ Of Joy & Play
- Music — your favorite songs on repeat.
- The genre that sends chills down your spine.
- Friendship bracelets, cat’s cradle, singing off-key, interpretive dance.
- Real laughter and inside jokes.
- Puzzles, crayons, glitter pens, stickers, new journals waiting to be filled.
- People-watching and noticing the good in humanity.
- Rewatching a safe show that feels like home.
✦ Of Creation & Curiosity
- Poetry — reading it and writing it.
- Photography — noticing beauty.
- Calligraphy, vinyl records, typewriters, polaroids, candles, houseplants, herb gardens.
- Watching creativity finally come to fruition.
- Learning new things: TED Talks, NPR, Science Friday, “How It’s Made.”
- Epiphanies and “ah-ha” moments.
- The dream of a private library with a rolling ladder and a cozy reading nook.
✦ Of Love & Connection
- Hugs.
- Handwritten letters.
- Real smiles that light up someone’s face.
- Good morning / good night texts.
- Comfortable silence and sacred presence.
- Random acts of kindness.
- People who care about you and would miss you — not as pressure, but as proof you matter and are important.
✦ Of Eternity
- Mental illness lies — it does not get to write your ending.
- Feelings, even painful ones, pass. Give time, time. Healing is possible.
- You have been okay before — and you can be again.
- Joy may one day rise to meet the depth of your sorrow.
- Love is still available to you.
✦ Of Becoming
- You can be helped — and you can let people help you.
- The freedom of self-expression and enough self-confidence to take up space.
- Recapturing childhood wonder — to play unfettered and freely.
- Advocating for change and reducing stigma.
- Learning, growing, and becoming someone you respect.
- Choosing safer coping again and again.
- You are uniquely you, and the world would not be the same without you.
Each reason is a star.
Not all will shine at once — but even one is enough to navigate by.
Please choose one. Hold onto it tightly, and stay.
